Beatrice Hamblett is my wife. OK, the introduction is over. Bea has been photographing from the late 1980's, when a friend in Massachusetts gave her a Beseler 23CII Enlarger, trays, and other paraphernalia needed for Black and White photography. She took some classes at Columbia University, and later went back to Columbia for her Master's degree. When she and I met, she had a setup in her bathroom in her NYC apartment that had to be torn apart every night before bed.

She still has the Beseler and the trays, but they are used in a tiny darkroom in Greece. Bea has travelled extensively in Greece, and in other eastern European countries.

I have now built her about 6 darkrooms, the one in DC being rather swanky. Like me, Bea works everyday in some aspect of her craft. Today, she was pressing some photographs she made yesterday -- still in the tradition of Ansel Adams.

I built Bea's first website in 2004. You can find it in the internet archives. If you tap the image below, you'll see her site.

The image on the left is Bea's old enlarger. This still works even after 40 years. It does need an occasional lightbulb. The image above is Bea's studio. The darkroom is behind this rotating black doors. I'd take a picture, but ... it's dark.

The image above is my wife on the road, working. She is off somewhere in the north western part of Greece, climbing mountains,  making friends, and making photographs.

Below are some of my favorite images of her work (in addition to the one above)
