• How long have you been in Information Technology?
    evolution

Some of us, since the 1960s. Others, the 1980s.

  • What are your Development Methods for building websites?
Today, there are standards for building websites - the idea being that if a site conforms to the international standards, it should be completely viewable on any modern browser (for example Firefox, Safari, Chrome, Opera). Unfortunately, a number of older browsers, such as Internet Explorer 6 and 7, do not fully support the standards.

Clients have to make a decision when building a website - are you building for the future or the past. If you choose for the future, a number of functions in the site may not work on older browsers (including older versions of Firefox and Safari).

Fortunately, browsers are generally free of cost, and are very easy to install. But we understand that you must consider what browsers, your visitors will likely use.

This all being said, BohTech will work with you to craft a website to your specifications. We can provide references on request.

There are a number of technologies that go into building modern websites. These include (X)html, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), Javascript, and others. Each website page has pieces of each, plus other technologies as required. Fortunately, we have access to some amazing tools and resources to employ these languages, and we are experts in their use. If a site is designed by us, it can be maintained by us, but if you choose, it can be maintained by another company. There is nothing prohibited or proprietary in our work.

The computer programs we use include: RapidWeaver , BBEdit, CSSEdit, Apple Developer Tools, Graphic Converter, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Flash and Adobe Dreamweaver.

Some companies and/or individuals need to be able to maintain the content within their website. The choices are to train your staff how to change the content using the programs we use to build the site, or to build the site using a relatively new technology called "Content Management". These can be simple to build and difficult to use, or they can employ expensive products.

There are some solutions that we can use but these again, may limit your site look and readability on older browsers. The tools we can work with are varied, but include: Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal, and some low-end CMS "plugins" such as WebYep, Pulse, SurrealCMS and CushyCMS.

We acquire images where necessary through iPhotostock and VectorStock. Of course, we can use your personal and/or company images.

Finally, by programming the website properly, it should be seen by the major search engines - not only based on it's name, but also based on keywords that you supply, and that we develop together. This technology is called "Search Engine Optimization". It's an area where there are many companies that will sell you useless products. Nothing succeeds like having a well-built, standards-conforming website.

  • What if we want a web site that will run on Windows?
    ie6
No problem. Our development will be on Macs but our websites will run on Windows. HOWEVER, we will not develop a website specifically for Internet Explorer 6 or 7.

Further, we encourage you to download Firefox, Safari , Chrome or Opera for Mac and/or Windows. All of these browsers are free, and we will guarantee that your site will run using them. We also guarantee you'll like using any of these browsers more!

  • Where will our website live?
We are based in Washington DC, but we can develop websites for clients around the world, for example Faros is a site for a organization registered in Greece (note the .gr suffix).

In many parts of the world, the speed of the internet is fast enough today that it doesn't really matter where the site is physically located. In areas where the internet speed is slow, and the client base is local, you may need to use a local Internet Service Provider (ISP).

As long as the ISP supports the common FTP protocol (if they do not, they should not be an ISP), we can craft your site, and upload it (using FTP) to the ISP of your choice.

We prefer to use a company in Utah, called , finding their service and support excellent.

  • When did you build your first web site?
    450px-Mosaic_browser_plaque_ncsa
    1994 with Mosaic!

  • Wont you help us with Windows?
    no-windows-480
Only to help you transition away.

Seriously, while we know enough about Windows to help you move your files, email, contacts, etc to a Mac, we cannot give support to Windows users.

There are plenty of providers - in fact whole industries of IT departments - who will be only too pleased to take your money to keep your viruses and spyware at bay.

  • What does a web site cost?
    dollarSign
It varies depending upon the complexity of the site. A new small site will cost about $1000 including setting up the web hosting for three years, setting up email and developing the site. More complex sites can cost a lot more, but we will work with you to keep within your budget.

Examples: Urbanitea cost $2000 (plus hosting fees). beatricehamblett.com cost $2500.

Hint: To keep costs down, prepare as much of your material as possible before starting to build your site. Also, list as many "keywords" as possible that describe your business, your site, you. These are used by search engines and are much easier to insert as the site is built, than later.

  • Do you have an hourly rate for web site work?
    Dollar Sign
Yes, if you prefer to use us this way, we will charge between $80 and $150 per hour depending on the complexity of the tasks.

  • How will you help us transition to Macs?
    apple_imac_24
We will gauge your needs for free and determine if the transition is possible. We will make a full report back to you with a recommended plan of action.

If you decide to move forward, our purchasing, installation, training and initial support services cost $120 per hour.
